Mentoring

manuscriptIn addition to the novel writing workshops I teach, I am occasionally available for full manuscript consultations and one-on-one mentoring, for select manuscripts and writers.

This would be a way to work with me privately on your YA manuscript and gain detailed, constructive feedback on a draft to help you move forward with revision. If you prefer, it could also be a way for you to work with me on a first draft over an extended period of time, with deadlines that will help you finish the novel and gain feedback along the way. I am sometimes also available for partial manuscript critiques, if you are working on a book proposal or an application for an MFA program.

FULL MANUSCRIPT CONSULTATIONS

What this entails:

• I will read your novel manuscript by a date mutually agreed on by the two of us, and then send you written feedback, including a critique letter and margin notes using Tracked Changes in Microsoft Word. My critique will focus on ways to help you reach your ultimate vision and at the same time make your manuscript as enticing as possible for agents, editors, and, ultimately, readers.

• After you receive my critique, we can arrange a phone call or Skype or FaceTime session of up to an hour to discuss, and to give you the opportunity to ask me follow-up questions. An in-person meeting in downtown Manhattan is possible instead, if you live in the New York City area. Or we can work solely through email. All of this is up to you.

FEE: $1,200 for a novel manuscript of no more than 70,000 words.

Additional fee for longer manuscripts. Payment must be made beforehand through PayPal, where you can pay with a credit card or a PayPal account.

PLEASE NOTE: My comments will not include detailed line edits or copyedits.

ONE-ON-ONE MENTORING

What this entails:

• You should come to me with at least 20 opening pages of a first draft of your novel and a short pitch or summary explaining the novel you are wanting to write. This does not need to be a well-crafted synopsis.

• At the start of our time together, we can arrange a phone call or Skype or FaceTime session to discuss your plans and ideas for your novel, or we can discuss this via email if that’s easier.

• Together, we will arrange monthly deadlines over a three-month (or otherwise agreed-on) period, in which you will have the opportunity to show me pages each month and gain written feedback from me as you keep writing forward. You will be welcome to email me questions on the feedback as you go.

• At the end of our months together, we can arrange a second phone call or Skype or FaceTime session of up to one hour to discuss, and to give you the opportunity to ask me follow-up questions. An in-person meeting in downtown Manhattan is possible instead, if you live in the New York City area. Or we can work solely through email. All of this is up to you.

FEE: $1,500 for three months. Other arrangements, depending on your own personal goals and timeline, can be discussed. Payment must be monthly before we begin, via PayPal, where you can pay with a credit card or a PayPal account.

PLEASE NOTE: My comments will not include detailed line edits or copyedits.

PARTIAL MANUSCRIPT CRITIQUE

What this entails:

• I will read the opening 50 pages of your novel by a date mutually agreed on by the two of us, and then send you written feedback, including a critique letter and margin notes using Tracked Changes in Microsoft Word. My critique will focus on how your pages work as a hook-worthy, compelling opening and where I hope the story will go from here.

  • After you receive my critique, you can email me follow-up comments or questions, or we can arrange a phone call or Skype or FaceTime session of up to 30 minutes to discuss. This is up to you.
  • FEE: $300 for up to 50 pages plus a synopsis (manuscript pages must be formatted as US letter with standard margins, double-spaced, 12-point font).
  • If you are working with a shorter manuscript—a sample for an MFA application, for example, the fee will be lower, and we can discuss.
  • Payment must be made beforehand through PayPal, where you can pay with a credit card or a PayPal account.

PLEASE NOTE: My comments will not include detailed line edits or copyedits.

MANUSCRIPTS THAT WOULD BE THE BEST FIT

  • I am most interested in working on young adult novels and upper middle-grade novels, but I would consider adult fiction that crosses over to a teen audience. I love most genres, especially realistic fiction and literary voices as well as anything magical or fantastical or horror or light science fiction.
  • I would not be the best reader for high fantasy or serious science fiction. I would be a terrible reader for a book about sports. If you aren’t sure, feel free to email me.
  • I am seeking writers who are serious about making their work better. This would not be a good idea for someone experimenting with writing fiction for the first time ever.

INQUIRE ABOUT AVAILABILITY

I may have some time starting in the fall.

Please email nova@novaren.com if you are interested in inquiring about working with me privately on your manuscript. In the email, please include the following:

  1. Please tell me about your novel and where you are in the writing process.
  2. Tell me about yourself and your writing experience and if you have taken any workshops or writing classes before.
  3. Tell me if and where you have been published before, or if you are currently signed with a literary agent.
  4. Please let me know when ideally you would want feedback by, or when you would be most interested in doing the one-on-one mentoring.

If I have room in my schedule, and if the manuscript seems like a good fit, I will let you know.

Please see my Workshops page for more testimonials from writers who have worked with me.
